What is a Home altar?
Back in the day, families actually had miniature replicas of the high altars in the church. They would place candles on it and prayer cards from the funerals of deceased loved ones. They might even decorate it in keeping with the Liturgical Season.
Maybe you have a home altar that has been passed down through the family. If not, you can create your own for your family. It doesn't need to be anything elaborate. You are simply creating a sacred space within your home where your family can come together for prayer. Having a dedicated space in your home for prayer is a great physical reminder of the need to pray to God daily and thank him for our blessings.
It is the custom for Catholic families to have religious art throughout the home as reminders of the Divine and the life of faith we are called to live. Gather a few of those sacred items- a crucifix, Bible, prayer cards, a statue (add a candle if you want) and place them on a table or a wall mounted shelf in your living room. Hang a religious picture or scripture verse above the table/shelf. You can hang pictures of family members who have passed away- or those who have a particular need that you are praying for.
After your family has created your home altar- pray! Obviously, everyone in the family can pray in your sacred space anytime of the day- but set a time that every day, everyone will drop what their doing and come together for family prayer.
